
The island of Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus in November, 1493. It was a colony of Spain until 1898 when, as a result of the Spanish-American war, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Puerto Rico is located 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, 3-1/2 hours by plane from New York, 4 hours from Boston and 2-1/2 hours from Miami. The island is only 100 by 35 miles, roughly the size of Connecticut.
The average annual temperature is 82F with constant easterly trade winds. The U.S. Weather Bureau has never measured temperatures in San Juan below 70F or higher than 97F.
The population of the island is 3.8 million and the languages spoken are English and Spanish. The U.S. dollar is the official currency. U.S. citizens can travel freely in and out of the island without going through immigration or customs.

The heart of the San Juan Metropolitan Area is connected from North to South by four main roads: Luis A. Ferre Expressway 22 , Munoz Rivera Avenue 1, Ponce de Leon Avenue 25 and Kennedy Avenue 2. From East to West you may travel through Roosevelt Avenue 17, Baldorioty de Castro Avenue 26, and De Diego Expressway 22.
Munoz Rivera 1 and Ponce de Leon 25 Avenues go through the Hato Rey area, the famous Milla de Oro or Golden Mile, where the island's main business and banking sector is located.
